  6. The most glaring omission from this list would be the tragic loss of a man named as one of "The 50 Greatest NASCAR Drivers of All Time"-- Richie Evans of New York, a 9-time NASCAR champion, and still ranked as the greatest Modified race driver.

    Richie Evans was a charismatic  and consummate competitor. whose sudden and incomprehensible death in 1985 during practice laps at Martinsville, VA, stunned the racing community.  A stuck throttle slammed him full-bore into the wall and a legend was lost at the age of 44.

    He was so far ahead in the points race, he won the championship posthumously.  It is still difficult to believe that he was overcome by the machinery he controlled so well.
