Question:

How many Pit Bulls are at your local shelter?

At our local SPCA, 11/17 of the breeds are Pit Bulls. We have recently been introduced to dog-fighting in our town, which has been devastating. Due to the high price of Pit Bulls being sold on the street - over $1,000 per puppy - some people have been resorting to other breeds (i.e. Boxers and Rottweilers). This information was given to us from a woman who volunteers at the local shelter.

Last month, our local SPCA had gotten an entire litter of Boxer puppies that were bred for fighting - when they turned 6 months old, the Backyard Breeder was putting cigarette butts in the food, to cause them to react from the lack of nicotine.

Out of these other dogs, 5 are either Boxers or Rottweilers - that all are aggressive towards other animals. There is only 1 dog in our local shelter that is NOT aggressive towards other animals - can you imagine that? I've went to see these Pit Bulls, and all are being worked on daily to become better pets for their future owners.

Has your local shelter been introduced to the troubles with Pit Bulls and other breeds being exposed to dog-fighting?

  1. Our animal care will not adopt out Pitties.  That is why when I found my pit she was abandoned on the street after just weaning a litter (probably going to be fighters), and was beaten.  Animal Care and Control TOLD us to keep her because she was so sweet and if we didn't keep her, she would be put down after 30 days of waiting for an owner to claim her.

It is sad.  We are working on making Lily Jean a breed ambassador....Pitties shouldn't need it though, they have a higher temperment test rating as a breed than the golden retriever, just bad raps :(

If you didn't know, many breeds have been bred from the same lines as pits, including, but not limited to, boxers, english bulldogs, american bull dogs, staffie bull terriers, bull terriers, bull mastiffs, pugs(yes, the little pugs), french bull dogs(yes, the little french bull dogs), and several other breeds.

Saying that, it is not hard to imagine other breeds being fighters, especially the ones listed above (although a pug would not do much damage!!)

The muscular dogs, like rotts and pitties and mastiffs, etc, are more prone to be abused in this way because of the significant damage they can cause.

Sorry, rambling....But I'm sick of this abuse going on.

  2. We dont have any Pit Bulls at our shelter. In my town if any one see's a sign of animal abuse they will most likley get called in. We dont have any boxers either, but we do have 1 rottweiler, Tulip, she's a stray.

  3. HERE AT MY LOCAL SHELTER I HAVE NEVER SEEN A PITBULL THERE ,OR EVEN A PIT MIX ,AND I GO THERE TWICE A WEEK ,BUT THEY USUALLY HAVE LAB OR COLLIE  OR CHOW MIXS BUT NEVER PITS

AND THE REASON FOR THAT IS BECAUSE IS THEY KNOW THAT THEY COULD MAKE MORE MONEY THAT THE 64$ ITS COST TO GET A DOG THERE SO THEY TAKE THE PITS IF THEY FIND ONE HOME WITH THEM ,,HERE WHERE I LIVE PITS ARE SO DESIRED THAT I HAVE EVEN PAID FOR MYSELF OVER 3500$ FOR ONE BUT HE IS WELL BREED AND REG AND WAS BOUGHT FROM A KENNEL

  4. Dog fighting has never been much of a problem in our area. However, in the last few years the number of homeless APBTs have skyrocketed.

My local shelter is absolutely PACKED with APBTs. They've started pinning up fliers, articles, and newspapers on all the walls of the shelter about how loyal APBTs are. They are just not getting adopted out.

Dog fighting isn't common around here, but ignorance sure is. Since the early 1900s we've only had a handful of dog fatalities and NONE of them include an APBT. None of the people who go to the shelter and make snippy comments about how dangerous bully's are seem to know jack about anything other than what the media tells them.

It's sad even thinking about it.

  5. Unfortunately, all pits are immediately euthanized. I say punish the deed not the breed. We love our little Cowboy. He's as sweet as the Huskies and Mastiffs we have.

  6. Our shelter has 46 pit bull terriers there now.

  7. On monday I went with my sister in law and I counted 14 Pit Bulls. 4 of them were one death row. This just makes me sick 2 of the 14 would no come up to the gate but all the rest of them did with this look like save me they some barked some put there paws through the bars and some rolled over and wanted there belly's rubbed. I just find this very sad.
