There's probably a few thousand satellites orbiting Earth right now...all at different orbits and distances... and performing different functions.

I don't have the exact number at hand at the moment....maybe someone else will.

well there is Sky tv, Google earth, spy satelites from American - russia - china - possibly france, other TV channels, weather forecast satelites. I'd guess at around 25

A satellite is any body orbiting a planet, for example the moon is considered a natural satellite.

WIth this in mind, the number of satellites numbers the millions. A bolt lost of the space shuttle for example, orbits the earth until it burns up, is considered a satellite.

But if you are talking about artifical satellites such as a weather satellite, then around 3000 is the correct number.
