there was some territory in the area now called Texas and California,  but they were not states.

Virtually all of California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, along with parts of Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, and much of Texas are on land which used to be part of Mexico.

And, of course, ALL of these places, including Mexico, belonged to other people long before that.  Boohoo, it's history now.
