How many active, power producing, coal factories exist in the United States, today in 2008?

Additional details, like where they all are, what there names are, and just how much coal each one burns, or how much they all burn, or whatever else, very appreciated!

Thanks guys!!!

  1. There are many Coal Power Plants in the United States. To many to list.

However i did attach the newly created Coal Power Plants Database which is now available from DOE. It has everything and anything you want to know about the Coal Power Plants. You just have to click on the link and it takes a little while for the file to download. It has everything that you wanted to know on the excel worksheet. It is truly great

(The first link is the excel file link. The second is the database website if the excel file doesn't work. On the Database website the link is called "Excel Database") If you are having trouble finding it email me

  2. We have a lot of coal, and therefore it's often pretty cheap to build coal power plants.  There are a LOT of them, at least around here where the coal is.

I don't think the issue is so much with that the power plants are using coal nearly so much as what the environmental controls on their emissions are. . . things have gotten much, much cleaner over the past few decades with increasingly strict emissions requirements.  It seems to be substantially cheaper so far to just upgrade the environmental controls on existing coal power plants than to build different types of plants or retrofit the old ones to use something else.
