Shutters can be replaced, so technically the D40 isn't at its end of life when the shutter dies.  (While it might be cheaper to get it repaired, most people will opt to upgrade to a newer body since it will take them a several years to reach that number.)  Usually only the professional models such as the D3 are actually rated, since a pro can easily reach 100K shutter actuations in several months.  Best guess for a model like the D40 is somewhere between 50K and 75K shutter actuations, depending on how you shoot.
