  1. every aircraft is different , variations are great, they are used for all kinds of controls on any many kinds of craft from planes to helicopters

  2. almost every aircraft movable parts comes with actuator esp those heavy ones or hydraulic actuated are done by actuators:

Cargo doors (wide body-747,777,A340,A330,DC-10) are opened by actuators either auto by hydraulic or manual thru a hand pump or socket wrench.

Landing Gears are extended and retracted by actuators.

Aircon Ram Air Doors are open and close by a ram air actuator.

Flight Control surface esp the Airbus fly by wire are all actuated by two actuators one active while the other is in damping mode (just follow what the active actuator does) ex Spoilers. Flaps are by screwjack type actuators. 747 L.E slats are extended by rotary actuators thru the pneumatic drive unit.

Mostly the actuators are of the piston type where there are two ports one to extend the piston rod and the other to retract it.

Thrust Reversers are deployed and stowed by screwjack type of actuators.

APU Doors (inlet doors) are opened by actuators otherwise one cannot start the APU for start-up ckt is in the door open cycle.

Hope I have helped you though it makes me review my Ground Engineer Course by anwering questions like this.
