  1. Yepper....depending on the time of day...you can well over 5,000 planes in the air.  Awesome.


  2. I'd have to at least quadruple the numbers the others have given. All of those dots are only the aircraft in radar contact with air traffic control over the United States. There's no telling how many other aircraft (airships, ballons, gliders) are also in the air but not talking with air traffic control or being tracked by radar. Then you add in all the aircraft over all the other countries and oceans of the world and we're talking about a really big number! Boeing says that for their 737, the best-selling commercial jet in history: "On average, about 1,554 737s are in the air at all times; one takes off or lands every 4.9 seconds."
