How many airliner jets are in the air at once in the U.S.? (estimated)?

Ok i was watching the news and they flashed a map of the U.S. and i saw tons and tons of plane icons up.. but does anyone know where i can go to see this map or does anyone have an idea of how many planes are in the air? How could i see this for myself?

It's really only 3 or 4. That display board was whacked, that was actually showing all the McDonald locations nation-wide.

Its hard to say the exact number but flightaware.com does show the flights so you can count all the icons at the moment.

there are 3256 active IFR flights registerd flying to/from/ or inside of the US at this moment.
