  1. "Nearly 175,000 American, Canadian, and British troops had entered Normandy, either by air or sea," Stephen Ambrose, D-Day, pg. 576.  He has a footnote to that sentence:  "No exact figures are possible, either for the number of men landed or for casualties, for D-Day alone."
