  1. at least 340

  2. As mentioned it's 3.1 plate appearances times number of games the team plays.

However there is an exception that could allow someone with less than the mininum number to still be the batting champ.

From the MLB Rule Book - Rule 10.23(a):

If there is any player with fewer than the required number of plate appearances whose average would be the highest, if he were charged with the required number of plate appearances or official at bats, then that player shall be awarded the batting championship or slugging championship.

  3. He doesn't need a specific number of at bats, it is plate appearances. He needs to have 3.1 plate appearances per team game. So over the course of a 162 game season, he would need 502 plate appearances.

  4. 502 plate appearances.

  5. At-bats are not the relevant metric. Plate appearances are (which makes it rather frustrating that PA are not always available; they're out there, but one typically must dig for them).

MLB requires 3.1 PA per team's games played (distinguished by league; AL batting stats won't follow a player traded to the NL, like Ramirez). For a full 162 game schedule, this works out to 502 PA necessary to qualify.
