    At the beginning of 1996, there were some 21,000 operational nuclear weapons in the world. Divided among six countries, nearly 95 percent of the world's nuclear weapons are in the possession of the U.S. and Russia.

    Both of these have been reduced since the end of

    the cold war when they numbered in the tens of thousands.

    FAS.org:

    Federation of American Scientists and Natural Resources Defense Council estimates that the stockpile will decline from approximately 9,938 warheads today to approximately 5,047 warheads by the end of 2012.

    The size of the arsenals of other countries

    is not so well known.
