  2. Spain is divided up into 17** Autonomous regions including the mainland and the Canary islands and Balearic islands.  These regions have been further divided into 52 provinces.

    ** The cities of Melilla and Ceuta (near Morocco) are also owned by Spain and that Autonomy status.
