  1. hi lets not do it

  2. alright, i had hamsters. and i knew nothing about them, when mine had a babie, she only had two, and we heard that your supposed to seperate the dad and mam, cause the dad eats 'em. either we seperated the wrong one. haha. oops. or the mom ate 'em. it was horrible. i dont know the difference between teddy bear hampsters or normal ones. good luck. :]]

  3. If the female has never had babies before, there is a high chance that she eat them once they are born. This is very normal for them to do. The mom may also kill them is she senses that something may be wrong with the babies.  I work at a pet store and we currently have a female hammie that came to us pregnant and she had 5 babies but I have seen others have as many as 11. There is no real guarantee as to how many they will have and I would highly recommend that you and your friend not mate your hamsters.

  4. Pet Store hamsters should never be bred.

Syrian breeding should only be done by an experienced breeder, since the personality is so territorial, they can kill each other.

Pet Store hamsters have often been inbred and that will show up in the babies as missing limbs, organs, or eyes.

Keep in mind Syrians are solitary by nature, so each and every baby will need its own cage.

    IF you insist:

Do you have a small animal vet and funding in case the pregnancy or birth goes wrong? Or if one severely injures the other?

Do you know both of their medical histories? Pet store hamsters should not be bred, as you don't know their family history with defects or injuries. The hamsters you have now may even be inbred.

If you got them from a breeder, call and ask the breeder's advice.

Are you planning to keep the babies or adopt them out?

If you are planning on keeping them, you need to get enough living spaces for them- new cages, etc.

If you are going to adopt them out, you should have enough homes BEFORE the babies are conceived.

    How old is the female?

If she gives birth and decides she isn't ready, she will eat her babies. Same if she is too old. Anything over 4 months is too old to be bred for the first time.

The male needs to either not be housed with her during the pregnancy, or removed IMMEDIATELY after the babies are born, or he will impregnate her within minutes or hours or birth, that's how hamsters work.

Do you know enough not to try and change the bedding for a week or so after the babies are born, so as not to upset the mom? If they smell like humans, she will eat them.

That is a lot to think about and do research into.

    Please don't do something stupid.

Contact breeders in your area and get some research done

  5. three to seven

  6. Please don't backyard breed.

Why are you breeding? Think about it. Breeding is not a game... it's not a matter of just putting a male and female animal together. Mess with the wrong genes and breed the wrong animals and you could end up with some very sick babies. Do you know the mom and dad's genetic/health history at least three generations back? Pet store animals should never be bred, you know nothing about their health background. It doesn't matter if they seem healthy now or the vet gave them a clean bill of health... it's what's in their genes. There are more than enough small animals in shelters and rescues without more poorly bred ones being added to the overpopulation. There's a lot more to breeding responsibly than you might think.
