They don't weigh hand luggage but it has to be small enough to fit in the overhead storage.

You can usually have 2 hand luggage bags.

Airlines now have different policies.  Several are now charging for your first piece of checked luggage, up to 50lbs.  That fee is $15.  For baggage over 50lbs, and for an additional piece of luggage, you usually have to pay $25-50 depending on the airline.

Southwest still allows you to check 2 pieces for no charge, up to 50lbs each.

You can usually bring one carry-on and a personal item, such as a purse or briefcase, on board with you.  The carry-on must be able to fit in the overhead bins.  They are starting to crack down on carry-on size because of the charges for checked baggage, so make sure yours isn't too big.
