a barrel is a unit of volume.  it is 42 us gallons

a metric ton is a unit of weight - it is 2204.6 lbs

so to convert the 2 you will need to know the products density.

veg oils typically weigh aboout 7 lbs per us gallon (this of course depends on the temp and the actual oil, but this is a good rough figure to use)

so, 2204.6 lbs (one mt)/7 lbs(wt of veg oil) = 315 gallons

315 gallons / 42 gal per bbl = 7.5 bbls of veg oil = 1 mt (approx)

different ptoducts have different densities, all of which will need to be adjusted for temps to convert bbls to metric tons.

we measure ship and shore tanks in volume because there is not a scale on tanks.  we then sample the product and take it to a lab to determine the density or S.G. at 60F.  we then back calculate the tank in question to the temp it was when it was gauged/measured.
