  1. Spanish Lynx- has more distinctive spots than its counter part  in Northern Europe and Asia.

Eurasian Lynx- It has a rusty gray background with black markings that vary from black splotches to stripes. Some don't have any markings at all.

Bobcat- The bobcat is smaller than both Lynx species and have vivid spots on their legs that fade into the abdomen.

Caracal- this is a desert cat with very narrow, tufted ears and to black spots above each eye. They usually have a tan red complexion.

Serval- This is another desert cat that has very vivid spots on a deep golden backdrop. It has bat like ears and a banded tail.

Tiger- The largest of the Big Cats, with several different subspecies, (there are 5, the largest of which is the Siberian)

the tiger can vary from white to deep golden red with a white under belly. They are usually docile in nature, not unusual for solitary cats. there used to be 8 subspecies, but 3 have gone extinct since 1950.

Puma- The largest cat in North America, the "Mountain Lion" has a distinctively narrow skull and relatively large paws. the tip of its snout is white and it has black tipped ears and a black spot over each eye and a white splotch on each side of the muzzle. Their coloration is a bland tan brown. Although they are more closely related to smaller cat species, pumas are larger than many "big" cats. They have been reported to leap in excess of forty feet.

Clouded Leopard- its homeland is in China and down through Indonesia. Its coat has large, dark shapes much like a girraffes. It has a dark gray shade over its entire body.

Leopard- Found in southern Asia and Africa, the Leopard has distinctive circular spots. Some become melanic (have large amounts of the pigment melanin) and become very dark. Hence the "Black Panther". This cat uses trees for both a haven and hunting post. Tourists sometimes lose dogs to leopards leaping down from trees.

Snow Leopard- Famous for its rarity, the snow Leopard has a bushy, white gray coat with large, circular splotches on its back and flanks and solid spots toward its white belly. Researches can search for months in the mountains of central Asia for just a few seconds glimpse of this secretive animal.

Jaguar- Similar in appearance to the Leopard, the Jaguar has a much larger jowl and stockier body. it is the only true "big cat" in the New World. They prefer swamps and flood plains.

Cheetah- It has small black spots against a dark golden background. Unlike most cats, Cheetahs have no retractable claws. Their specialized paws are more suitable for sprinting.

most of the food they catch is quickly stolen by larger predators like hyenas, lions, and groups of wild dogs. they can run in excess of 62 mph (100 kph).

Lion- The very interesting thing about lions is that they are group animals. This is very unusual among cats. As such, they form an almost canine hierarchy within prides. Males are famous for their large manes, but also their very powerful frame. Even females are built thickly. The less know variety of lion is the Asiatic Lion, which only has a population of 200-300 in the Gir Forest region of India.

Ha ha, I'm a major animal geek. But these aren't the most bad a** of the cats. Here's the real deal.

Felis Silvestris catus: distinctive by their very prolific nature, Silvestris catus is the most lethal and adaptive of all cat species. They eat almost anything that moves and are among the best hunters in the fossil record. Most environments that come into contact with this species are irreversibly changed.

They are very intelligent and can be trained varies simple commands and even how to work simple devises such as doorknobs. This animal has highly developed senses for most mammals. And there might be one ready to attack your feet tonight! So be warned...

  2. Lion: A really big cat -- weighs 350 - 530 lbs -- tan color.

Tiger: Can grow even bigger that lion -- black/tan stripes -- weighs 396 - 573 lbs.

Leopard: Smaller than lion and tiger -- weighs 66 - 155 lbs -- black spots on tan.

    Jaguar: weighs 126 - 249 lbs -- black spots on tan/white.

Cheetah: 86 - 143 lbs -- black spots on tan. Fastest land animal on earth.

These are the cats I saw at the MalaMala game preserve in South Africa a few years ago. Weight numbers from The BigCats web site (see link, below).

The ones I haven't seen up close include snow leopard, clouded leopard and cougar.
