  1. Population estimates are about 11000 for the blue whale, worldwide.  The IWC did a survey in the late 90's of the Southern Hemisphere population and came up with about 4500.  There is no "you think", there is data.  Of course it is very difficult to get population estimates of any sea going animal.  As a biologist I understand the difficulties.

Yes, blue whale are the largest animal to ever live on Earth, note the capital E.

  2. There are between 5000 and 10 000 but numbers are increasing due to a ban on whaling, and yes they are the biggest animal to have ever lived on Earth

  3. Blue Whales were abundant in nearly all oceans until the beginning of the twentieth century. For over 40 years they were hunted almost to extinction by whalers until protected by the international community in 1966. A 2002 report estimated there were 5,000 to 12,000 Blue Whales worldwide[7] located in at least five groups. More recent research into the Pygmy subspecies suggests this may be an underestimate.[8] Before whaling the largest population was in the Antarctic, numbering approximately 239,000 (range 202,000 to 311,000).[9] There remain only much smaller (around 2,000) concentrations in each of the North-East Pacific, Antarctic, and Indian Ocean groups. There are two more groups in the North Atlantic and at least two in the Southern Hemisphere.

Past commercial whaling of Blue Whales is the main factor responsible for the population decline. Throughout the North Pacific between 1910 and 1965, commercial whalers harvested at least 9,500 Blue Whales, some of which were caught by shore-based whaling stations in British Columbia from the early 1900s to 1965. Since the end of commercial whaling, human threats have included collisions with ships, increasing whale-watching activity, entanglement in fishing gear, and pollution (especially oil pollution).

    YOUR SECOND QUESTION:

The Blue whale is the largest animal on Earth today—and the largest known to have ever existed. Hunted relentlessly for hundreds of years, the species remains endangered today, although there is now an international ban on taking Blue whales. Sightings of Blue whales off Canada’s Pacific coast have been rare in recent years, suggesting that population numbers have fallen quite low.

    Good Luck!!!
