Hi, I have a new filly at home but her mother is not producing enough milk so I need to give her some additional substitute. How much should I give her a day? Thanks for the help.

  1. It depends on the amount of milk your giving to her and how much the filly is drinking from the mare in order to give more

  2. The label on the milk replacer should have recommendations for how much to feed per day.  Since the filly is still nursing the dam, you probably won't need to give her quite as much as the label suggests.  Monitor her body condition to make sure she is getting enough.  If she starts to scour, you may be giving her too much.

Not knowing the ration of the dam, you may need to change the mare to a high quality mare/foal feed with high quality hay or grass to up the nutrient intake of the dam.  This will help with her milk production as well.

  3. One of our little fillies was orphaned.

While we waited for the nurse mare we gave 2 baby bottles every 2 hours (Foal-Lac).  If she finished it all then the next feeding we would do another bottle but only half full, just in case she wanted more.

When the nurse mare came we still gave a bottle every 4 hours since the mare wasn't happy about her adopted filly.

We were able to coax the baby to drink from a pan so we mixed the foal-lac powder up in that and put it on the side of the stall that the mare couldn't access. (creep strap)

The baby would wander over, check it out, sip some..play, come back and sip some more.

But my situation is different than yours....a little.
