Firstly, the British have a huge authorship, and they have the Bard.

Thy haven't done TV well, nor movies.  But there have been great actors and actresses from there.  Many of whom don't get so much as a nod from hollywood.  My point is, there have been great bodies of work from the UK, and great actors shine when the roles have been made Just-for-them.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet or Hugh Grant....!!!!!! Bill Knighy doesn't do to bad either....Colin Firth....Keira Knightley....there are quite a few!

Please don't forget Jeremy Bulloch!

This guy starred alongside Cliff Richard in the hit musical Summer Holiday in 1962!

Jeremy played an assistant to Q in two James Bond films!

Jeremy even played a small cameo role in the fanfilm Downfall - Order of the Sith!

Of course, Jeremy is most famous for being the guy who put on the Boba Fett mask!  He only had 2 lines but he delivered them perfectly!  Jeremy even has his own postage stamp and Pez dispenser (as Boba Fett)!  Now he tours the entire world attending Science Fiction conventions!  

Of all the British actors, this guy has clearly clutched the pinnacle.
