Question:

How many calories (or if ever, in ATP) are spent whenever one smiles and frowns?

We have to answer this for our professor.

He specifically asked us to give the number of moles of glucose that we'd spent up whenever we smile, frown, study and have s*x.

(We are discussing about the metabolic pathways, and are calculating the number of ATP yield, that's why he asked)

please. There aren't any quantifications of the values in the internet.

  1. Picture your face as muscle.  Depending on the size I will guess the mass of the muscle required to frown or smile is 100-200 grams.  This is for a single smile of a few seconds in duration.

Using 0.44uMoles of ATP per gram of muscle weight (ref 1).

That would require 44-88uMoles of ATP for a frown or smile.

Since 1 mole of glucose gets you 36 moles of ATP.

    Divide by 36.

1.2-2.4 umoles of glucose. Glucose yields 686000 calories/mole.  This means a 0.8-1.6 calorie increase above basal (resting) metabolism by smiling or frowning.

The s*x Question, that depends on how long and how it is performed.  I would treat it as a full body aerobic workout, and you should be able to find calculators online for that.

    Cheers!
