  1. My boyfriend just started selling cars.  He sold 7 cars in his first two weeks and then nothing the last week and a half.  The traffic just hasn't been there.  It seems to be a very up and down business. Every one thinks the potential for him to make money is HUGE though.

  2. The responses so far have been amazing to me.  I am shocked by what some people think, and what some very experienced people actually believe.

You asked the question in exactly the right way.  You asked for what the average person sells.  The average car salesperson sells 10.5 units per month.  This is the average person and the average month.  Seasonal effects on sales do take place but they vary depending on where you are in the country.

In 11 out of the twelve months there is also another rule of thumb.  You will either sell 2/3 of the total volume in the last half of the month, or 1/2 of your total volume in the last 10 days.  December is the one exeception to the rule.

As for the new salesperson, that depends on you and the training you received.  Many new people will sell big numbers right out of the gates, until the veteran salespeople get their hands on them and convince them "it can't be done", then their numbers drop off.  Others will start out slowly and then build.

I have trained brand new, no experience, automotive sales people for years, how do sell honestly, professionally, ethically and with no high pressure tactics for years.

There are great ways of building a network very quickly and becoming very proficient at what you do, even in a down market and down economy.

If you aren't selling 8+ cars per month right away, find another line of business, or someone that can train you.  After years of automotive sales training, my average salesperson sold 13.7 cars per month.  That's right, the average.  I have some salespeople selling 30 and 40 per month.

One woman contacted me after her first year.  She made $250,000 in her first year.  She outsold the next 4 volume producers in her dealership, combined!

It can be done, done well, and can be fun and exciting.  If you do well, just don't rest on your laurels.  Keep selling!

    Good luck

  3. You cannot go by AVERAGE salesman figure.  Unlike a sales help at the local dept store, at dealerships your SALESMANSHIP completely determines your income.

In a single dealership (or Real Estate agency, etc.) you can have one salesman making a million dollars per year, and another person thinking of dropping out because they can't pay the bills.  It is all about the SALESMANSHIP - not the average.

    Good Luck...

  4. I run a new car dealership and most new sales people will sell 3 or 4 cars in first month.  Mostly due to the sales person learning and tagging along with who ever is training him/her.

If you work for Toyota or Nissan you better 20 cars per month to make a living, domestic you can do about 12 to make a living.  If you are getting into this business good luck, it is a fun business and I have made a lot of money selling cars over the years.

  5. It would depend on where you live and what sort of car you are selling, and if you sell new or used cars.

Usually, salesman dont go on number of cars, they go on profit. As in, they have a target of $5000 profit for the week, but that is only an example.
