How many cents does it take to send a letter?

im trying to send around 4-5 pages in a regular envelope to my friend, not too far away. around 5 miles away? how many cents, or what kind of stamp do i use?

Usually, up to 5 pages of regular printer paper can be mailed for the regular first-class stamp rate.  Those are 42 cents right now, assuming you're in the U.S.  When in doubt, I'll just throw an extra stamp on to make sure it's okay.

If you are in the United States, it doesn't matter how far away in the US you are mailing the letter. Around four or five pages could require one or two stamps depending on the weight of the paper. Since it would cost time and money to take it to the post office to have it weighed, just put two stamps on it. If you have any second ounce stamps at home, use one of these for the second stamp.
