How many chances you have to take written test in California?

I was wondering how many chances do you have to take the written test in California. I heard you had three chances, but what happens after you fail those three times? Do you repay the fee to take the test again? And once you fail, can you take the test again the next day or is there a time limit like waiting a week until taking the test again?

3 times max, pay the fees again.  You can take the test the same day if you want.
