  1. Prophase doesn't produce any chromosomes.  What does happen is that chromatin (thin strands of DNA) condenses into chromosomes (thick DNA strands).  The chromosomes are easier to separate than chromatin.

Chromosomes are the condensed form that our DNA takes during cell division.  It's a matter of organization.  For humans, we have a total of 46 chromosomes.  That is how many form during prophase of mitosis for us.  Other animals and plants have different numbers of chromosomes.  The only truly common feature is that the chromosomes occur in pairs.  All organisms have an even number of chromosomes because of this, unless they have some type of genetic defect.
