  1. God lord, if I had a dollar for every time some uninformed uneducated soul starts spitting out that useless garbage about 1 inch per fish chit I'd have stock in Yahoo right now.

You are talking about overcrowded?   You realize you said 10 gallon tank right?  About the only thing that can go in a 10 gallon tank is a Betta and maybe something like zebra danios, which are NOT cichlids btw.  Another piece of advise for the future here, when you throw the word cichlid around, try to narrow that down to lake of origin.

Actually there is only one option you have truthfully.  Shell Dwellers.  The shell dwellers from lake Tanganyika literally are small enough to live inside of a shell.  However, I suspect you are going to pay a high price to get these, that it just may be worth your time to move your tank size up.  Anything outside of Shell Dwellers, MAYBE like dwarf types or Rams at best, but any other tank mates are not even an option.

  2. none 1 needs 20 gallons and 10 every extra fish :) hope this help and have fun with your new fish

  3. It all depends on size and type of cichlid, what type were you thinking about getting?  Also, the one inch per gallon guide would have different application here because you want your fish to have space and be comfortable.  I would say 1-3, but that depends on type.

  4. none if you want chihlids you at least need a 40 gallon tank
