  1. You can take as many, or as few as you like. Full-time students are classed as those who take at least 12 credit hours a semester, which is generally four classes. So full-time students tend to take between 12-15 credits hours (4-5 classes).

It is possible to take 18+ credit hours, but doing so usually requires consent and is not recommended for college freshman and it is also possible to take less than 12 credit hours and study part-time, but this can affect your medical insurance, financial aid and scholarship funding, so you should check the conditions of those if you are considering fewer than 12 credit hours per semester.

  2. At most college the maximum amount of credits you can take is 18 per semester or 36 per year, which amounts to about 6-7 classes per semester/ and 12-14 per year.  You do not have to take the maximum though.  The minimum to be a full time college student is 12 semester credits, or about 4 classes.  You do not absolutely have to take 4 classes, you could go part time, but usually for students on any kind of financial aid, 12 credits each semester will be required to get that aid.

If you enrolled yourself in 18 credits, 6 courses and then on the 3rd day of class you realized you couldn't handle it, you could drop a course without any penalties, but if you waited 3 weeks into that course and that withdrew, you would get a W on the transcript and no money back for the course either!
