  1. I'm not sure. I went to university very near the Silverdale colliery about 15 years ago and remember hearing there were about 6 then.

    Last I heard it too was threatened with closure despite turning a profit.

  5. On 31 August 2006 there were 25 licensed opencast mines and six deep mines still open in the UK, down from over 200 deep mines before Thatcher and over 1000 at nationalisation in 1946.

    5000 employees now down from 200 000 before Thatcher and over 1 000 000 after the War.

    Kellingley colliery, known as "The big K" by miners, near Castleford in West Yorkshire, is still the biggest pit in Europe, with the highest output and at least 60 million tons of unmined reserves.
