It is commonly said that there are seven colors in a rainbow, but that isn't true.  A rainbow is formed by a drop of rain acting like a prism and seperating white light into it's full spectrum.  The part that we can see is called the visible spectrum and has wavelengths between 380 to 750 nm.  The visible spectrum consists of an infinite number of colors and that is what we see in the rainbow.  The colors have been broadly classified into 7 categories, but in reality a rainbow is a continuous change in color from red to violet and does not have 7 distinct colors.
