Depends on who you ask, really...FIFA, the world football governing body, recognises 204 countries.

ps...and I don't think that includes The Vatican (at least, I can't remember seeing any of their results)

With the addition of Montenegro on 28 June 2006, there are 192 United Nations member states, including virtually all internationally-recognized independent states.

A rough count of these states would place the number of countries in the world at 201. That includes the 193 states recognized by the United Nations, as well as eight additional states. These are the Western Sahara, Taiwan, Northern Cyprus, Somaliland, South Ossetia, Transnistria, Abkhazia, and Nagorno-Karabakh. These states meet the criteria set out by the Montevideo Convention, but are all in a struggle with another, larger state, for independence, and so far have not been formally recognized by the United Nations.

Im not sure... I think I once heard over 200.  But I dont know.  I have every country memorized and know exactly where it is.  That isnt really all that difficult to do. Whether or not some places are really countries though is sometimes disputable.

195 this includes The Vatican, Taiwan ( which China says is hers ) and the new Kosova ( which Sebie says is hers ) an there are around 70 dependence's such as Gibraltar, Falklands and so on.
