  1. There are currently 31 monarchs reigning over 45 extant sovereign monarchies in the world. The following nations all have some variation of a monarchy government. A monarch is a type of ruler or head of state. Monarchs almost always inherit their titles and are rulers for life; that is, they have no term limit. Historically monarchs have been more or less absolute rulers. Modern monarchs are often figureheads who either have power, but do not exercise it personally or, have little power. However, there are others with substantial or absolute power. Monarchs usually represent a larger monarchical system which has established rules and customs regarding succession, duties, and powers. A nation ruled by a monarch is called a monarchy.

  2. There's different types of Monarchies. There's constitutional monarchies where the Monarch is the head of state but has very little (if any) real power. This includes all European Monarchies (with the exception of Monaco). Then there are absolute monarchies where the word of the head of state is the law an example is Brunei where the Sultan is also Prime Minister.
