Question:

How many credits do I need to be a sophomore if I'm going from home school to public school?

Okay, so I've been in public school all my life, and this year I went to school online. My credits DO count, and I was in 9th grade this year. I am going back to public school this year, but I'm afraid I don't have enough credits to be moved up to sophomore. I am still taking history from last year while I start the coming year, but I finished Geometry, English 1, Biology, and a semester of Spanish 2 (I'm taking the other semester over next summer). I'm also taking drivers ed. right now, so when I start my year I'll be taking all seven classes at public school plus my online history and drivers ed. course.

So right now, I have 3.5 credits plus my honors class from 8th grade, so that's 4.5, and I'm working on getting history credit (+1) and Drivers Ed. (+0.5).

So I have 4.5. I WILL have 5.5 by the end of the year. Would they not let me be a sophomore this year without those credits?

I don't want to be in 9th grade again, even if I'm taking all classes for 10th. It's kinda weird if I'm 9th grade over just a couple classes I'm trying to finish. I talked to my teacher, she isn't sure. And I called the school like 6 times today with questions and this one is too difficult to explain over the phone. I'm sorry that was so long. If anyone can help, please do. It's complicated, though, so if not I understand.

Thank you SO much!

  1. I do understand you dilemma, and the school should be able to determine that for you. I think you may be speaking with the wrong person at the school. Try and make an appointment with a counselor and get this straightened out ASAP. Try to go in and meet with them with your parents. Unfortunately some school officials are busy this time of year and it's easier to blow off your problem over the phone.  It sounds like it is causing you a lot of unneeded stress.

    Best of Luck!

  2. Schools have a minimum number of credits that you have to have to be promoted to the next class.  It's good that your online credits count!  I'm going to suggest that you finish that history credit asap, which might put you over that boundary.  (Or it might not, I don't know your school system's requirements.)  That would make you 5.5, right?  Then driver's ed would make it 6.  Even if you don't have enough by the first day of school, they MIGHT promote you mid-year if you get all the required credits by that time.  Then technically, you'd spend only one semester as a sophomore, and next year start school as a junior when you should.
