  1. 9" wide, 12" gap (21" on center)

    5280 * 12 / (9+12)  =  3017 ties / mile


  2. The above is mostly correct.  However, sidings and yard tracks, with the lower speeds, have a wider gap between the cross ties than does main line trackage.  Can save the companies big bucks using fewer ties.
