Since "cult" typically refers to a cohesive social group devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding population considers to be outside the mainstream, any sect which is outside the norm is a cult. Thus any sect could be called a cult when transferred to another place, so thousands.

There are many definitions of the word cult, and in recent years it has gained a pretty negative connotation.  That being said the correct definition of cult is...

1. Formal Religious Veneration.

2. A system of Religious beliefs and Rituals also the adherents of those beliefs.

3. An unorthodox religion.

4. A system for the cure of disease based on dogma

5. Devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work.

For a religion to fall outside one of those definitions would make it fail the test that makes it a religion in the first place.  Thus all religions are cults, but cult is in effect "a system of religious beliefs and rituals and the people who follow them."

It's just a very loaded term anymore.

It all depends on your understanding and definition of cult along with your own faith and / or belief system.

I don't believe Christianity is a cult nor do I believe Islam, Judaism or even Atheism are cults but I do see groups within all of them that are cult like in nature.

In Christianity there are many controlling groups with a very cult like nature most mainstream Christians will say JWs, Mormons, Scientology etc but there are many more groups seen as mainstream that are cult like..... It all comes down to perception.
