  1. 8 cylinders in a V8

    V12 = 12

    V6 = 6

    V4 = 4

  2. A V-8 has 8 cylinders and the more cylinders you have the more fuel you will need to generate full power. Some V-8's can shutdown some of there cylinders when they don't need them this allows a V-8 to get better gas mileage than it would have but all V-8's are gas hogs. No matter what tricks they put into the motor.

  3. V-8: Eight cylinders in a V configuration. There are in-line, radial and opposed configurations as well. The displacement of the engine is what usually determines basic fuel consumption. The demand (load) on the engine is the big factor. The heavier you mash on the throttle the more fuel you consume. The driver is the largest factor in fuel economy, the driver controls almost everything including load, maintenance and efficient driving conditions. Of course a 4 cylinder 1.6L is going to use less than an 8 cyl. 7.5L. It's also true that "drag" reduces fuel efficiency so air up the tires, get the alignment done and roll up the windows.

    Brian, try not to use absolutes or you might be incorrect often. The key is "always" , the truth is NOT always. VCD Variable Cylinder Displacement was pioneered in the late 70's early 80's and worked in theory, Cadillac used a mechanical method to cut cylinders when they were not needed and increased the fuel mileage of the Fleetwood Brougham considerably. With today's advanced systems the car's computer can fire cylinders randomly and do it in a manner that the passengers do not feel any difference. It's cylinders on demand using both the fuel injectors and the ignition system. It's done at cruise speeds and low load conditions. Great system so far. Stretches the mileage on the V8 to well above the mid 30's MPG.

  4. V8 means 8 cylinders, arranged in a V shape when viewed from the front.  4 cylinders on either side.  Not necessarily more fuel needed, it depends on more than what?  The larger the engine displacement the more fuel is used, as a general rule.  How much energy is required from the engine is the main determining factor.

  5. Not necessarily. V-6 with more total cubic inch displacement than a V-8 will use more fuel. Further, GVW and drag coefficient will influence fuel consumption.
