Before and after what?  Ovulation?

Ovulation generally occurs around day 14 if you have a regular 28 day cycle.  Sperm can survive up to 5 days inside the woman's body prior to the egg being released.  Once a woman releases an egg, it needs to be fertilized within about 24 hours.  If its not, then the egg dies and its simply absorbed by the body.
