  1. The important thing is to make sure alcohol withdrawal happens under medical supervision. Someone addicted to alcohol who stops drinking suddenly can suffer DTs (delirium tremens), seizures -- people have died due to effects of withdrawal if it isn't managed properly. A person is usually checked into a rehab facility so that they can be monitored continually.

There are a number of articles below that address all the factors involved in this, as well as the time frame.

EDIT - just thought of this: it may be helpful to talk to someone from Alcoholics Anonymous. They've all been through the detox/drying out process and can perhaps provide guidance and support. Because they realize what an important step this is, they may come be there for your friend - I have friends in AA who will drop everything if they get a phone call requesting their help.

  2. It depends how much you drink and how long you have been drinking.

  3. It'd be more like hours then days if you'd have withdrawal symptoms at all.
