  1. This has been a difficult winter and my kids have been more sick than usual too.  As long as you're getting any missed work from the teacher and your child is catching up, I'd say you're doing the right thing to keep him home when he's ill.  Nobody wants a sick child at school infecting everyone else.  Follow up with the doctor and maybe see about boosting his immune system with echinacea or something.

Hang in there - Spring is almost here.

  2. Well like some comments said, see a doctor. But if he is sick, he is sick. If he went to school they would send him home straight away wouldn't they? I don't think letting him stay home when he is genuinely sick is nothing wrong. But if he stays home alot definitely get a doctor.

  3. as others said, ask at the school.

obviously you can't send a child to school with a fever, or throwing up, or with pink eye or somethingm and if it happens a lot there's not much you can do about it.  but if you're keeping them home just for a mild cold -- a sniffle or mild cough -- then you might want to reconsider that, as most school nurses will tell you it's fine to send your child under those circumstances, and usually a child with a mild cold feels well enough for school.

also, especially if he's missing a lot of school, try to schedule doctor's appointments for after school (for things like checking up on his eye, i mean, obviously not if he's really sick and needs to see someone immediately).

edit -- and the people who say something must be seriously wrong if your child gets sick once a month either don't have kids or have been blessed with really healthy ones!

  4. talk to your doc!

  5. We have a 10 day limit in our schools. I always send a dr's note if she's home and had been to the doctor because those absences are 'excused' as opposed to if I just call her in sick which is 'notified'. The excused absences don't count against the 10 days. The main reason for the limit is so people aren't letting their kids stay home for no reason. I know plenty of sickly kids that have gone over the 10 days and that was fine-the school just needs to know why they're absent.

  6. It depends on how old your child is.   The further along they are in school, the harder it is when they miss a day.   I would not worry too much if your child is in kindergarten or first grade.  At that age, children tend to pick up every little virus and bug that is going around, and they don't miss TOO much when they miss school, because there is lots of review of the work being done.  However, if your child is in high school, missing even one day results in a ton of work needing to be made up.

  7. If he's out for a legitimate reason, and you have a doctor's note to back it up, that's fine. Most schools have a limit for "unexecused" absences (school districts receive funding based on attendance levels).

I was also sick a lot as a child; up until the second or third grade, I never went a month without missing at least one day. And I didn't regularly start going until around the fifth or sixth grade. Just be sure to pick up any assignments your son misses so that he can keep up with the class while he's home.

  8. If your child is getting sick that much something is worng. Nobody get sick that much. You need to ask the doctor about it.

  9. as long as ur not missing work and ur picking up his HW for him to do while hes resting then its fine. sounds like hes stilll young, my 11 old brother missed alot last year and still passed with mostly B's. the older he gets the harder it will be for him to keep up wit his work but usually they arnt getting sick as they get older also

but make sure to call the schools attendance office to see what their policy is for the missed days and explain what has been going on with the sick, appt, sick again, ect.

  10. Aloha from Down Unda!

    Did you mean, "...too many?"

It seems there was already one 'too' many!

A day missed at school can lead to a year missed in life!

Look at how many missed Vacation Bible School!

    Best wishes~

  11. you need to talk to the school about that.  all schools are different about days missed.  at the school my kids attend you can only miss 6 days a semester.  after that it doesnt matter the grades they will have to repeat the grade.

  12. some kids are just prone to being sick it is their immune system. maybe he needs some vitamins to help build up his system.

  13. The only answer to this question is your school's attendance policy. In my state a child can miss no more than 18 days of school. Any child who is approaching 18 days mostly after they've missed 10 days (but this can vary from district to district) an attendance review meeting is scheduled with the parents.  If there are medical issues substantiated by a medical doctor then the attendance requirements can be altered.

With pink eye which is highly contagious your school system can arrange for home instruction until your child is well. Please check with your school district to see about their attendance policy.

    Good luck.
