  1. Rhino told a very good options in Mexico City. I recommend to visit Queretaro city, 2 hours at north of capital city.

We have colonial arquitecture, and the independence was planned here. Our political constitucion born in Republic Teather.

2 hours into the state there is a mountain complex with natural atractions like Conqa and the two rivers, one of warm ando other with cold water, that runs beside without mixing their temperature.

One our a go from Queretaro is San Miguel de allende, with a emblematic Gothic church.

Nearby is Dolores Hidalgo, in state of guanajuato, were Hidalgo priest begin the independence war in 1810.

  2. I think it woud be very hard to give you an amount of time to visit Mexico in just 1 trip, knwoing Mexico City well would take 1 week already (though if you're on a big rush and only want to see a few places, 2 days could suffice for you to visit the downtown area preferrably on a Saturday morning to give you time to walk around and maybe go to Teotihuacan on a Sunday when the fare is free.

If time is an issue, skip the museum of anthropology in my opinion. The building is gorgeous, but it has very few prehispanic items on display. You could see the entire museum in just 1 hour if you don't stop by and read everything. It barely gives you a taste of each culture.

The Chapultepec castle is a nice museum, but to save time, pay the 5 pesos and get on the trolley train to go up the hill. It will save you 1 hour of walking in Mexico City's lovely altitude so you won't end up huffing and puffing in the museum.

The wax museum is a fun visit and probably cheap since it isn't a big tourist attraction.

The Frida Kahlo museum is great, but it's a far trip from downtown. You could get there by subway fairly quick.

If you enjoy doing things that aren't just the Teotihuacan pyramids (there's over 20 pyramids scattered around the Mexico City area BTW), you could also visit some of the villages in the State of Mexico if you have time. I personally like Villa del Carbon which is just a 1 hour drive from northern Mexico City. Nice place if you're into leather clothes. La Marquesa is a sort of semi national park that few foreign tourists go to. It's mostly a few hills with forest where you can eat amazingly cheap but very good food (the area is famous for it's trout and rabbit cuisine) and you can ride a horse for an hour for 15 dollars.

The nice thing about the Marquesa is that it's just right next to Mexico City. You could even take a quick bus from the Observatorio subway station and spend a few hours there. Dunno why tourists never go there, I find it to be really fun.

Dunno, maybe you should just focus on specific cities and go by there? Puebla is a beloved city by mexicans (sadly I've never been there :( ). In Guanajuato you can see mummies of people that died from the black plague.

You could also aim for religious tourism. La Basilica de Guadalupe is a quick subway trip from downtown Mexico City and a must see if you're into famous christian artifacts.

  3. Start with Mexico City.  The first link below is a good hotel in Mexico City.  Thing to see:

    National Museum of Anthropology

    Chapultepec Castle

The Ballet Folklorico at the Palacio de Bellas Artes

    The Frida Kahlo Museum

Then there's dozens of other sites to see in Mexico City.  Just seeing Mexico City could take you a week.

After seeing Mexico City, there are a hundred other cities you could visit (Mexico is so diverse).

A city close to Mexico City is Puebla, and if you're on a budget, a bus is the cheapest way to get there.

After that, if you still have time, my favorite cities in all of Mexico are Oaxaca and San Cristobal de Las Casas.

I went to Mexico the first time in 1976 and spent three weeks (first in Mexico City; then drove out to Chichen Itza and back).  This only whet my appitite to see more.  I've been back 24 times and there's still places I want to see but just haven't gotten to yet.  Get a good Mexico guide book and read through it to see what would most interest you.

  4. a trip to the state of guanajuato would be awesome!....i stongly suggest you go and see the piramyds of teotihuacan, an of ourse if you could only get a tour to visit mexico city one or two days it must include a visit to the MUSEUM ON ANTHOPOLOGY and history.
