  1. The temperature would depend on the size, shape and material of the heating element.  You probably have to ask the manufacturer or maybe a hair stylist who is familiar with these.

EDIT: In a way, you've stumbled onto a key design problem in electronics: dealing with heat. It's not a dumb question at all. In fact it comes up a lot in in system design, especially when it comes to high-power computer ICs.

And that question is, what is the thermal "resistance" of your heater and its package, that is, its theta(JA). And, yup, it's expressed as degrees rise per watt, the very thing you're asking!

So how do engineers answer it? They use some very fancy thermal modeling software, or they test the device using a known power input, or they... ask the manufacturer.

  2. That is like asking how many apples are in a square root?

Watts consumed will raise an object X degrees.

  3. You cannot directly convert watts into degrees.    More watts = more power, so might produce more heat, but it depends on the thermostats in the appliances.

  4. Read the info again 20 watts would not melt an icecream.People who sell these items can inform you of the power you need to straighten your hair. Its not an offence to plead ignorance.
