Question:

How many deserted islands are left?

I just saw a commercial for Man v. Wild showcasing Bear's survival on a deserted island. My question is are there any deserted islands left? of all the islands in the world, how many are not actually inhabited by someone, or at least owned/visited by someone?

Thinking of all the movies about being deserted on an island, I bet by now there are very few left if any. Wondering if anyone knows?

  1. There are hundreds of tiny uninhabited islands. They are uninhabited because they are too small to support human activity unless your a hermit or something. Maybe even thousands of small ones.

  2. More than you might think but they are generally small with no way to support any type of larger creatures. What is now almost an impossibility is the classic Gilligan's Island type of "uncharted desert isle".

    Pretty much all charted now.

  3. Devon Island in Canada is deserted

  4. At least tens of thousands. Lake Huron (one of the Great Lakes bordering Michigan and Ontario) alone has 30,000+ islands. The vast majority of those are uninhabited.

  5. i bet there is a tiny one with a 10 ft circumference and a plam tree in the middle with a cooler full of beer.

  6. Wikipedia lists 309 deserted (uninhabited islands).  I am sure there are at least a thousand of them.  Click on the source link and find out where they are located.

Guiness Book of World Records named Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic as the most remote place on earth.

  7. From the definition of an island, there must be literally thousands, maybe millions, of deserted islands.  An island can be a rock mass that protrudes above the water at high tide with no limit on its size.

I believe you should qualify your question to include some aspects of the island such as a fresh water supply, trees, birds, whatever???
