  1. Not many, but there are a few parts of the country diverse enough to be classified as their own climates.

The vast majority of Syria is dessert, which is extremely hot in the day, and extremely cold at night. While during winter months, the temperature does drop noticeably, it remains very warm. Rain will occasionally fall during the winter, but otherwise the entire country is very arid.

Areas with higher altitudes, especially mountainous areas, tend to be pleasant spring through autumn, though springs can tend to be slightly warm. In winter, it is not uncommon for snow to fall for a few days.

The north of the country, while having much less snowfall than the south, does get more rain and is much greener, especially in winter. Summers do tend to be hot, though not as bad as in the rest of the country.

The North-West coast of Syria is actually very pleasant (aside from some humidity), due largely to it's elevation, small mountain range to the east and Mediterranean sea to the west. In general, the North-West has late-spring climate all year round.

  2. Syria has 3 different climatic areas:

    1) Mediterranean type climate,

    2) Mountain and

    3) Desert

    1) Mediterranean climate on the coast — hot dry summers and mild wet winters

    2) Mountainous regions have moderate summers, — interior plateaux have very hot summers and cold winters

    3) Desert climate in the Hamad region — warm and dry - some rain in fall season

    – coolest month is January and the hottest are July and August

    – annual precipitation is 304 mm (12 inches) - varies region to region

    – temperature ranges - 0 to 12 °C (32 to 54 °F) in January to 18 to 37°C( 65 to 99 °F) in August
