  1. The correct terminology would be "Native Americans" after all they were in North America before European settlers. Also, many tribes are not recognized by the government, even though they can prove their heritage and ancestral links. However, some tribes are already lost in a historical sense. So the answer to you question is we may never know how many tribes exist or existed.

  2. over 200

  3. Deponds on:

when are your talking about - today or at the time of initial contact - some estiamtes place the original number at over 500.

do you mean federally recognized tribes (does not include them all - even ones that some states recognize - legal issues).  For a map showing current reservations of "recognized tribes go to  http://www.nps.gov/history/nagpra/DOCUME... .  The index identifies over 300 reservations, but some tribes have more than one.

  4. I seriously doubt there is an answer to that question.  There is a lot of controversy regarding which tribes are actual tribes (there's a tribe in Maine that claims they are Native Americans but the Bureau of Indian Affairs disputes the claim).  There are also tribes within tribes (like the recently expelled Black Cherokees, or the Creeks, Choctaws, Delawares, etc that were adopted into the Cherokee tribe when the US government started packing the tribes into Indian Territory).  There's a lot of controversy over what it means to be Native American all over the Americas.  There isn't really a way to count the tribes up as there is not definition for what a Native American tribe is.

  5. Way more than anyone will believe. But, I found 49 major tribes.
