  1. My teacher used to say a weed is any plant that is where you don't want it.  So all plants are potentially weeds.  You sound like you are describing a Canadian Thistle plant. They tend to be a bit furry but they are not warm and fuzzy.  Gold finches love them and individual plants can get taller than five feet if you accidentally forget to pull them up.  There are also stinging nettle and horse nettle and probably a host of other ones depending on where you live.  You need to wear three pairs of gloves to pull them up.  If you don't pull them up they just come right back after you leave and laugh at you while they do. If you wait until they flower they reseed themselves and you can forget ever getting them under control.  According to Wikipedia there are fifteen different kinds of thistle.  In my area the most common weeds seems to be poke weed, deadly nightshade, wild rose, milk weed, dandelion, Canadian thistle, wild raspberry and silver maple seedlings to name just a few.

  2. Thousands.Any plant that grows and no one likes it or a new better hybrid has been developed is a weed.Nearly all the plants we have today have been hybridized from an older plant version. Some of which were called weeds.Dandelions is one. That one hasn't changed but you see what I mean.

  3. I don't know the answer, but there must be millions of kinds of weeds, and they all find their way into my garden!
