Yours is a complex question.  There are as many types of governments as there are societies.  Wikipedia lists forty different types.  Generally, governments lie on a continuum from "those that oppose change with force" to "those that advocate change with force."  In between those two extremes, one finds conservative, moderate and liberal governments of varying types.  

    Any of these idiologic positions can provide the basis for a government.  Among the more common types are: representative democracies (US, for example); oligarchies (present-day Russia and South Africa under the Apartheid system); plutocracies (rule by a small group of the wealthiest citizens); constitutional monarchies (Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, for example); and dictatorships (can be monarchies, single-party states, military dictatorships, etc.).
