A velocipede can be either a sitdown job, with 4 jokers ( 2 each side ), actively engaged in pushing and pulling against each other. So as to get up to a fair rate of knots; so to speak.

This is a four wheeled type.

The other sort that I have been on, is also a 4-wheeled type, and is propelled ( rail terminology for all you pedantic lot! ) by raising and lowering the handles. Much easier, and faster, too. One of this type is seen in THE GENERAL: a Buster Keaton silent movie.

Apart from these 2, are there any others in current use ? If not, are these kept in Railroad Museums anywhere ?

Please advise.....................

  1. I don't know the different types, but the SteamTown railroad museum in Pennsylvania had one set up on a short track section that you could actually use yourself.  It was the second type that you spoke of (vertical push T-handles).  Those things aren't easy to start or stop.
