How many different types of liquors and spirits are there?

the basic rule is that everything that contains sugar can be distilled into alcohol

the product can either contain sugar directly or be malted to change the starch in the product to sugar

If you know that about every edible fruit or plant contains sugar the number of possibilities are limitless.

most common resources to make spirits are

grain (e.g. whiskey, gin,...)

grapes (cognac, grappa,...)

rice (sake)

sugarcane (rum, cachaca)

fruit (calvados)

potatoes have been used in vodka or potcheen recipes too.

but there's many more possibilities.

1.  fermented - wine based

2.  brewed - malt or beer based

3.  distilled - spirits

I think all other types of liquor is a variation or a derivative of these 2 main types.
