How many different types of sailboats are there?

I want to buy a cheap one and can't decide if a sunfish or motorboat.

Sailboats are generally categorized in length, type of sail rig and keel. There are numerous variations due to advances in technology, geographic location and intended use.

A sunfish is a very basic design, intended for short trips. The motorboat you mention, if it's an aluminum car topper, will be similar in price. Generally, if the motorboat in question is larger (say a 15-18 foot runabout), you can actually find a small day sailer ( with a small cuddy cabin 18-22 ft long)) that is similar in price as well. I enjoy being on the water and own both a motor boat (25 ft Carver Santa Cruz) and a sailboat (26 ft MacGregor). Deciding which way to enjoy the water is up to you.
