there are tons of them varieties from out doors to inside palms some will cost you tons of dollars whereas others will be cheap as like those purchased in walmart or lowes  this is the house plant variety the out door type will cost you much much more and cheap or expensive you need to know how to take care of them to get your monies worth

There's reportedly a full list of the known ones here: http://www.trebrown.com/palms_arecaceae....  Wikipedia says there around 2600, though I don't think there are that many listed on the above linked site.  There are likely to be some species that are not yet discovered, in rain forests etc, which is some of the wonder of the natural world.

There's not a count on the first website, just a name list, though you could do this with a little patience.  Palms are a really diverse group of plants, some of them frost hardy, others needing really tropical conditions. I grow half a dozen species, and love them.  Many of them produce food, such as Dates and Coconuts of course, and there's also one used for making wine!
