  1. I think on average there are about 300 on the average ball.  Some companies add more dimples and they say it adds more spin or less wind resistance and things like that.  The dimples are for spin, wind resistance and touch and feel on the ball, especially with wedges.  I think top flite has a ball with dimples inside the dimples to resist wind friction.

  2. the average number of dimples is between 330 and 400 ish. The dimples are what makes the ball fly far. They create less drag than a smooth sphere would. it's complicated, but if you've seen the episode of mythbusters where they tested which is better: driving a pickup truck with the tailgate up or down?.... well turns out it's better to drive with it up because there is a mini-pocket of air circulation that allows the faster moving air to glide right over top of it. Same thing with the dimples. They create these small pockets of air that allow less friction against the wind and create less drag. the result is that the ball flys farther, straighter than if it had no dimples at all.

  3. Never counted. Maybe it has something to do centrifugal force or wind speed.

  4. there is exactly 400 dimples on a golf ball and they are there for aerodynamic porposes and putting

  5. The dimples make the ball fly further. It has to do with the aerodynamics allowing air or wind to give the ball lift.

It does make a problem for rolling straight. There is a ball more designed for putting advantages that has filled in every 6th dimple to help the ball roll truer
